My first baby step in Teaching Technology class was on 30/01/2018 during my TEA journey at George Mason University, USA. It took me to surprise realizing and understanding the various aspects of technology that initially I thought was just restricted to the usage of electronic devices to disseminate concepts in classroom.
Contrary to my belief, I learnt how important it is to establish the connection between the teacher and learner before you initiate any activity in classroom via technology. The term technology is just not restricted to the usage of electronic devices in classroom rather anything that bridges the gap between the learner and the concept is technology. Some of the advantages of technology that we learnt in class is that it helps in better understanding of concepts, saves time, helps in retention and mobilizes resources. We learnt that ABCS of technology are of extreme importance, i.e., Authentic Activity, Background Building Activity, Constructing Activity and Sharing Activity. Every aspect of it need to be emphasized upon for an effective implementation of technology in classroom situation. I look forward to more of such experience and exposure for further classes.
Like you, I thought that technology was all about having students use devices in the classroom and that was enough. Since I have been in the DDLS program at GMU, I have learned so much more about how technology integration enhances student learning! Lessons which are designed and incorporate technology allow learning to be differentiated and more meaningful to the individual student’s needs, which is especially important to students identified with learning disabilities. Lessons that include technology are not only engaging, but also give students the knowledge to construct meaningful conclusions which they can apply to real-world situations outside of the classroom. My overall goal is to have future-ready students that have the ability to use the authentic activities involving technology in order to become problem solvers, critical thinkers, and develop the skills needed to be successful in life.
